Secondary stars in CVs – the observational picture

چکیده

Recent theoretical and observational progress has substantially improved the definition of the lower main sequence and established a new basis for a comparison of main sequence stars and the secondaries in CVs. The evolutionary sequences of Kolb & Baraffe [1999] imply that the secondaries in many CVs are expanded compared with main sequence stars of the same mass as a consequence of unusually high mass transfer rates and/or pre-CV nuclear evolution. We show that the location of the secondaries of all well-studied CVs in the spectral type period diagram implies that they are consistent with having near-solar metallicities. We show, furthermore, that the surface brightness of K/M stars depends on gravity and metallicity and present new Barnes-Evans relations valid for dwarfs of near-solar metallicity and the secondaries in CVs of the galactic disk population. Distances derived by the surface brightness method agree with recent measurements of the trigonometric parallaxes of a few selected

0 Imaging the secondary stars in CVs

The secondary, Roche-lobe filling stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) are key to our understanding of the origin, evolution and behaviour of this class of interacting binary. We review the basic properties of the secondary stars in CVs and the observational and analysis methods required to detect them. We then describe the various astro-tomographic techniques which can be used to map the surfa...

The Role of the Sw Sextantis Stars in the Picture of Cv Evolution

The SW Sextantis stars are nova-like cataclysmic variables (CVs) which exhibit intricate behaviour which is still a matter of debate. For years the common belief has been that these systems were the " outlaws " of the CVs, mainly because of the lack of an overall understanding. We are now realising that a large percentage (∼ 30%) of all nova-likes in the ∼ 3 − 4 hour period range are SW Sex sta...

The Secondary Stars in Short Period (Magnetic) Cataclysmic Variables

We review the recent knowledge base pertaining to causes for mass accretion variations (high/low states) in highly magnetic cataclysmic variables (i.e. polars). We then examine what theory has to say about the properties of the secondary stars (the mass donors) with respect to those CVs with very short orbital periods. Finally, we use recent observations of EF Eri in an extended low state to pr...

The secondary star in cataclysmic variables and low mass X-ray binaries

We critically re-examine the available data on the spectral types, masses and radii of the secondary stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) and low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), using the new catalogue of Ritter & Kolb (1998) as a starting point. We find there are 55 reliable spectral type determinations and only 14 reliable mass determinations of CV secondary stars (10 and 5, respectively, in the...

The Donor Stars of Cataclysmic Variables

We carefully consider observational and theoretical constraints on the global properties of secondary stars in cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). We then use these constraints to construct and test a complete, semi-empirical donor sequence for CVs with orbital periods Porb 6 6 hrs. All key physical and photometric parameters of CV secondaries (along with their spectral types) are given as a func...
